Mizzou vs. LSU Football Preview

The Battle of the SEC Tigers takes place this Saturday as No. 21 Missouri hosts No. 23 Louisiana State.

Getting Back to Standard

After beginning the season with a rough 24-45 loss on the road to Florida State, the LSU Tigers bounced back with a three-game win streak. However, this win streak was cut short following a 49-55 slugfest against SEC West rivals, Mississippi. LSU is currently seeking out their first win against a ranked opponent this season after falling short to both FSU and Ole Miss.

LSU Head Coach Brian Kelly tipped his hat off to how impressive Mizzou has been this season. He discussed how fantastic the team’s offense has been to begin the season.

Mizzou’s Offensive Prowess

Mizzou’s offense has been effective and efficient. Quarterback, Brady Cook currently has the most consecutive passes thrown without an interception this season in the SEC with zero interceptions in his 141 passing attempts. Pairing a lethal quarterback with an offensive oriented head coach in Eliah Drinkwitz, has made for a recipe of success for Mizzou.

In addition, Drinkwitz has had similar success with other teams throughout his career as offensive coordinator. Such as two 9-4 seasons with NC State in 2017 and 2018 and a 12-1 season with No. 20 Appalachian State in 2019.

Drinkwitz talked about how his coaching success historically lines up with that of his quarterback.

Transfer Portal Effects

Both Kelly and Drinkwitz discussed how the transfer portal is essentially how the college football business works nowadays. Although they appreciate any great players they get from the transfer portal, both coaches relayed similar messages. They have their rosters set by the summer and they are going to make the most out of what they have.

Kelly has been much more vocal about the transfer portal. He stated how LSU managed to land Mizzou’s star defensive tackle, Mekhi Wingo in the transfer portal. Even going as far as allowing him to wear LSU’s prestigious No.18. According to Kelly, LSU has always wanted Wingo under their roster.

Drinkwitz said that he appreciates what the transfer portal allows players to do. However, he is more than content with the roster Mizzou has had locked in since June.
