SEC Baseball Weekly Report: Teams Making Moves

Following another exciting weekend of college baseball in the SEC.  To wit: Florida beat Miami again, Tennessee keeps hitting home runs to stay unbeaten and Texas A&M falls flat on its face. Georgia walked off FGCU four times, LSU was jumping in swimming pools and South Carolina was swept by Clemson.

On this week of Gator baseball weekly roundup- let’s see who the WRUF baseball reporters have in their SEC Top 5 and which team needs to be on everyone’s radar.

Tennessee (11-0) stays at No.1, after a 4-0 week that saw big wins against Arizona and Oklahoma State in Houston, Texas. Infielder Gavin Kilen hit five home runs last week and now leads the team in home runs (7) and batting average (.486).

Left-handed pitcher Liam Doyle continues to shine with another strongt outing Friday, going 4 1/3 innings, three hits, no runs and nine strikeouts. He’s now pitched 14 2/3 innings, with 34 strikeouts and an earned-run average of 0.61

LSU (11-1) moves to No.2 this week after sweeping through the Frisco College Baseball Classic. Steven Milam had a monster weekend in Frisco with six hits and a home run.

LHP Kade Anderson is blossoming into the ace LSU hoped he would be with another solid outing against Kansas State. Anderson went 5 1/3 innings pitched, two earned runs and 10 strikeouts. He now has 26 strikeouts in 15 2/3 innings pitched.

Georgia (13-1) stays at No.3 after sweeping FGCU. The Bulldogs walked it off four times (one was a mercy rule walk-off, but we’ll allow it). In two of the four games, Georgia trailed by five runs or more and in the series finale trailed 3-2 in the ninth before hitting a walk-off home run.

Georgia showed this weekend that the starting pitching is still shaky, but the bullpen again showed it can be counted on.

Georgia is hitting .301 as a team, with 122 runs, 138 hits and 27 home runs. Tre Phelps, who started the season slow, had a monster weekend, including a game-tying homer in game three to send it to extras. Phelps had eight hits, a homer, six RBIs and is now hitting .296.

Florida (11-1) moves to No. 4 after a series win against Miami. Aidan King was the big story this week. King was named SEC pitcher of the week after a combined 6 1/3 shutout, one-hit innings on one walk and seven strikeouts.

Texas A&M Drops, Arkansas Enters

Arkansas (10-1) entered the rankings at No. 5 after a hard-fought series sweep against UNC-Charlotte. Similar to Georgia, the pitching struggled overall, but the offense showed up when it needed to.

Tennessee is the last remaining undefeated team from the SEC in the top 10. The Vols are playing lights-out baseball right now after another big weekend.

With the next four teams, you could put them in any order and make a case for why one should be ahead of the other. Each team has one loss and has huge margins in their weekly run differential. They are roughly in the same order as the D1Baseball top 25, because there has not been anything set in stone that would allow for any movement.

With conference play starting soon, expect some clarity to start appearing with how some of these top teams match up against each other.

After this week in the SEC, the top five look different. Tennessee continues to be impressive, remaining undefeated. The Volunteers beat No.25 Oklahoma State and Arizona with relative ease and showed they can still win against just as competitive teams.

LSU jumped from No. 5 to No. 2, as the Tigers continue to win by more than six runs since their loss. On Friday, they were taken to extra innings against Kansas State but scored three in the 10th to get the win.

Georgia stays at No. 3 because the Bulldogs swept their series against Florida Gulf Coast. Until they start playing ranked teams, they will be at three because Tennessee and LSU are much stronger.

Arkansas made the top five at the No. 4 spot because it had a loss, but did beat No. 22 TCU earlier this year. Beating a ranked team like TCU will help the Razorbacks as the season progresses.

Finally, Florida dropped to No. 5 as the Gators experienced their first loss against Miami on Sunday. The pitching staff struggled in game three giving up 13 runs, which is one of the main reasons for the drop.

Team to Keep an Eye On

Hunter : Alabama (12-0) is one of three remaining undefeated teams in the SEC. The Crimson Tide entered the D1 Baseball top 25 for the first time this season, coming in at No.23. Following last week’s run through the Jacksonville Classic where the Tide walked it off against Ohio State, came back this week with a strong weekend performance against North Dakota State.

Shortstop Justin Lebron has been scorching hot at the plate to start the year. The sophomore from Miramar, Florida, is hitting .386 and is second in all of baseball with eight home runs. Lebron is one of the smoothest shortstops in the country and someone to keep an eye.

Jacob: Troy (11-1) is a team to watch. Troy is dominating its non-conference opponents and hanging in with some of the top teams with only one loss on its resume. The Trojans beat then-ranked Mississippi State 6-5 and barely lost to No. 22 Auburn 7-6.

They have a midweek matchup against No. 23 Alabama on Wednesday and it will be interesting to see if they can keep up with a powerful and deep SEC squad.

Brooke: Oklahoma (11-0) is ranked No. 13 in the D1Baseball rankings. The Sooners could enter the top five soon, as they beat Virginia 5-4, in 12 innings, when the Cavaliers were ranked No. 2. This shows that the Sooners can hold their own weight and score runs when needed.
Also, the Sooners are not far from the number of strikeouts these top five teams have: they have 112, while LSU has 135 and Arkansas has 110. Oklahoma will be tested this week when it takes on No. 21 Dallas Baptist University on Wednesday.

A victory Wednesday would be a big resume booster and likely move them up in the rankings.
