Johnson won two straight sets to secure the title match. He took the first set 6-2, dominating Games 2 and 6. Johnson earned $4,400, the largest winner’s prize check in UTR Pro Tennis Tour history. The win also increases his UTR, as Jones was rated higher.
Johnson entered the finals with a UTR of 13.10. Jones was the top seed with a UTR of 13.45.
UTR is a global rating system from 1.00-16.50 that assesses the skillset of a player. Regardless of race, gender or age, all players are rated on this same scale, and ratings are updated after every match.
In the second set, Johnson and Jones went back and forth, each taking turns winning games. In the second game, there were six break points with Johnson eventually succeeding, tying 1-1. There were a total of 14 break points in the match, 10 alone coming from the second set.
In Game 12 of the second set, Johnson tied the set 6-6 to force a tiebreaker, which would be settled in sudden-death with the first player scoring seven and winning by two.
Johnson struck first, and Jones responded. However, the Gator alum scored four straight to eventually win the final game. He allowed only two points in the tiebreaker.
The Summer Slam Championships are the final event of a 15-week Summer Slam Series. Only athletes who have won a Summer Slam event in these 15 weeks are permitted entry. Johnson won three: Winston-Salem( June 5-8), Knoxville (June 19-22) and Blacksburg (July 31-Aug. 3).
The Summer Series was created by UTR Sports, a league dedicated to connecting and growing tennis and pickleball players globally through fair ratings, events and competitive play. The series focused on giving current or recent college athletes opportunities to improve in the offseason.
This preparation for fall includes showcasing their skills and improving their UTR, or Universal Tennis Rating. The UTR Pro Tennis Tour has been a pathway for future professional tennis stars, including former UF tennis star Ben Shelton.
After going 32-7 this summer, Johnson is in good shape in preparation for this upcoming season although he’s not on the roster for any future events, according to UTR Sports.
“I just have to take advantage of every opportunity that I get to be here and play,” Johnson told UTR Sports. “It’s what I want to be doing.”
