Multiple Gators Earn SEC Honors

Receiver Dallas Wilson had a memorable debut for the Gators to win SEC Freshman of the Week honors after making six receptions for 111 yards and two touchdowns, which included a 55-yard scoring pass play where he shook off two Texas defenders on his way to the end zone. 

Special teams also played a huge part in the upset. Taylor Spierto earned the SEC Co-Special Teams Player of the Week award for his block of a Texas punt in the second quarter that went through the end zone to give the Gators a safety that extended their lead to 19-7. Spierto, who was originally a walk-on, has been a leader in the locker room. 

“He’s earned his scholarship and he makes all the other players around him better on special teams,” Florida coach Billy Napier said Monday.

The Gators head to College Station to play the No. 5 Texas A&M Aggies on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN. You can catch live coverage on 98.1-FM/850-AM WRUF starting at 4 p.m.

Heading into their matchup against No. 9 Texas last Saturday, the Florida Gators knew they needed a special performance to pull off the upset and get back on track after starting the season 1-3 for the first time since 1986.

The Gators went into Ben Hill Griffin Stadium and pulled it off to beat the Texas Longhorns 29-21. Because to their electric play, three Gators earned SEC honors, the league announced Monday.

Florida sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway received Offensive Player of the Week after throwing for 298 yards and two touchdowns while completing 21-of-28 passes in the must-win game for the Gators (2-3, 1-1 SEC).
