Rueben Chinyelu Shatters Florida Offensive Rebound Mark
It’s been nearly four decades since Dwayne Davis’ offensive rebound mark had been met. Rueben Chinyelu did just that.
The Gators center has broken the program’s record of 114 offense boards amid his historic junior campaign. Chinyelu has tallied more and more accolades nearly every week, and his first board against Texas in the first half notched another.
Averaging 7.4 boards per game across his collegiate career, he needed just one offensive rebound to break Davis’ 1988-89 record. Chinyelu has tallied a nation-leading 11.8 rebounds per game in his second year with Florida.
The Nigeria native had nabbed 16 double-doubles heading into the No. 7 Gators’ matchup in Austin. During Florida’s seven-game winning streak, Chinyelu averaged 14 boards across that stretch.
Chinyelu has been a key piece of Florida’s dominant frontcourt throughout the year. He was named to the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year watch list on Jan. 29, following his 100% (7-for-7) shooting night, coupled with 11 boards against South Carolina just the night before.
He was also the Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week on Jan. 21, after accumulating his fourth consecutive double-double against LSU.
Chinyelu has brought in 21 rebounds in two contests this season, tying the program record within the shot clock era. He will continue to extend the program’s record as the Gators eye the final three games of the regular season following Wednesday’s SEC matchup against the Longhorns.
