Florida Men’s Tennis Bounces Back Against No. 23 Ole Miss

No. 22 Florida men’s tennis bounced back with a 6-1 win Friday against No. 23 Ole Miss at the Ring Tennis Complex. 

Doubles

Florida (8-8, 2-4 SEC) jumped ahead early, taking a 1-0 lead ahead of Ole Miss (14-4, 2-4) with the doubles point. It grabbed their first match win on Court 3, where Andreas Timini-Kevin Edengren faced off against Ole Miss’ Matthieu Chambonniere-Benjamin Martin (6-3). Henry Jefferson-Jeremy Jin followed suit shortly after in another win against Stefano D’Agostino-Pietro Pampanin (6-4). Pablo Perez-Ramos-Lorenzo Clavierie remained unfinished at 5-5 against Isac Stromberg-Kai Milburn. 

Singles

The Gators got ahead in the first set. Timini on Court 6 took the first Florida set-one win at 6-1 against Loan Lestir. Perez Ramos grabbed the second on Court 3 6-3 against Pietro Pampanin. Jefferson followed shortly behind on Court 2 against Chambonniere. 

Adhithya Ganesan fell into a set one tiebreak against D’Agostino, which he won 7-4. The win marked the Gators fourth first-set win. Timini took the first singles win for the Gators on Court 6 6-1,6-4, extending the overall lead to 2-0. 

“Finishing first is always good,” Timini said. “Then you can just support the whole team and get it going.”

Both Jefferson and Perez-Ramos followed on Courts 2 and 3, with the match point on the board. Perez-Ramos finished next, winning 6-3, 6-4 against Pampanin. Jefferson was only minutes behind, taking the 4th winning point against Chambonniere 6-4, 6-2. 

After a 4-1 loss against TCU on Wednesday, Coach Adam Steinberg said the team’s mantra heading into the night was that it controls its own destiny. 

“Even though we lost that match against TCU, they gained a lot of confidence from it,” Steinberg said. “It got them down for just that night, but … the practices have been great and it showed tonight.”

The teams then finished out final matches: Edengren and Noah Schlagenhauf remained on Court 5, Ganesan and D’Agostino on Court 1, and Jin and Vlado Jankanj on Court 4. 

Ganesan finished first, winning 7-6, 6-4. Court 5 was next, where Schlagenhauf grabbed a point for Ole Miss with a 2-6, 6-3, 0-1 win against Edengren. The score was brought to 6-1 after Jin took a 4-6, 7-6 (12-10), 10-4 win against Jankanj on Court 4.

Up Next

Florida will play a double header Sunday against No. 7 Mississippi State (14-2, 5-1) and North Florida (8-6). The Gators will play the Bulldogs first at noon and face the Ospreys at 5 p.m.
