Jon Sumrall’s Secret? Gators Coach Loves a Good Pedicure
Gators coach Jon Sumrall is known for his intensity and passion on the football field. However, fans have learned about a different side of Florida’s new leader.
During Florida’s Ladies Clinic Friday, Sumrall’s wife, Ginny, revealed that the Gators coach enjoys getting pedicures during the season.
“He loves pedicures,” Ginny Sumrall told WCJB’s Olivia Eisenhauer. “That’s his favorite extra thing to do. Every two weeks in the football season, Jon loves to get a pedicure.”
For a coach known for showing his emotion on the sideline and delivering blunt assessments of his own team, this revelation offers a different look at Sumrall’s life beyond the football field.
This is the first Ladies Clinic at Florida since 2018, but the couple has hosted one at each program Sumrall has coached in the past four seasons.
“It’s just an opportunity in the community to give women an inside look into Gator football, and it really ties them into it so that on gameday they feel a part of what’s going on,” Ginny Sumrall said.
Sumrall arrives at Florida after four straight winning seasons as the head coach for Troy and Tulane. His resume also includes an American Athletic Conference title and a College Football Playoff berth last season with the Green Wave.
At SEC Media Days Wednesday, Sumrall talked about what goes into taking over another program, as Florida will be his third head coaching gig in five seasons.
“Every time you walk into a place that’s different, the most important thing you do as a new head coach is you listen to maybe what’s gone right and what’s gone wrong,” Sumrall said. “And you try to identify where you have to calibrate.”
Sumrall added that this approach has remained the same during the start of his tenure at the University of Florida.
“But every situation you walk into I think you have to evaluate what needs to be recalibrated and what’s been going good,” Sumrall said. “There have been some really good things going on at the University of Florida before my arrival. There have. We haven’t won enough games. We need to win more games. Like 4-8 last year is not okay at the University of Florida.”
The Gators have finished below .500 in four of their last five seasons and are facing a schedule that is good for seventh-toughest among FBS schools per ESPN. This includes the new nine-game SEC schedule that has been making waves around the conference, but Sumrall said he will not be complaining about it.
“I’m not going to whine and complain about being an SEC head football coach,” Sumrall said.
Jon Sumrall’s Swamp debut with the Florida Gators is set for Sept. 5, their season opener against FAU.
