Buchholz Routs Eastside to Extend Undefeated Start
The Buchholz Bobcats took over Citizens Field on Friday night by dismantling the Eastside Rams 49-7. The Bobcats’ suffocating defense allowed their offense to capitalize on short fields all night.
The Buchholz side of the crowd showed up ready as well, remaining a problem for Eastside throughout the affair. The Buchholz student section began the night exchanging chants with the Eastside faithful and largely outlasted home fans as the game progressed.
One of the early advantages for Buchholz (3-0) was the field position battle. The Bobcats, winners of their ninth consecutive city championship, returned the opening kickoff into Ram territory and marched down the field to claim an early 7-0 lead.
Meanwhile, the ensuing kickoff saw the ball skip past the Rams (0-3), but recovered deep inside their own territory. A quick defensive stop forced a punt, and the Bobcats took over at midfield following another strong return.
The trend continued for the rest of the game, with Eastside’s inability to move the ball granting favorable starting field position for Buchholz.
The Bobcats’ defense was lights out throughout the matchup, surrendering zero Eastside first downs until 2:14 to go in the third quarter. Between a forced fumble, an Eastside a safety due to a botched snap and two blocked punts from the Bobcats’ special teams, Buchholz kept the game under control and continued to produce short fields for its offense.
From the opening kick to the final whistle, the Bobcat defense neutralized the Rams.
Buchholz quarterback Andrew Whittemore led the way by accounting for five touchdowns, two through the air and three on the ground. Whittemore connected with senior Florida Atlantic commit Dominik Harvey for the Bobcats’ final touchdown of the first half, an 11-yard pass.
One of the lone exciting moments for Eastside fans came with 6:18 to go in the second quarter when junior cornerback Malicah Williams intercepted an errant pass from Whittemore and returned it for a touchdown. For a brief moment, the home sideline came alive, jolting a sudden burst of energy into a down Rams squad. The student section briefly resumed their chants toward Buchholz, with the score appearing to have been just the spark Eastside needed. The Rams trailed by only two possessions at 22-7 with a little more than six minutes to go in the half.
That hope proved to be short-lived, as the Bobcats easily worked the ball down the field, concluding the drive with Whittemore’s touchdown toss to Harvey. The Bobcats extended their lead to 29-7, swiftly taking back any momentum the Rams may have conjured up.
The second half brought more of the same, with Buchholz continuing to dominate and stifle Eastside’s offensive efforts. As rain began to fall at the start of the third quarter, all but a few passionate Eastside students had abandoned Citizens Field. On the other sideline, Buchholz students switched on their flashlights and sang their hearts out to Tom Petty’s “Won’t Back Down” despite the weather.
Like the fans, Buchholz kept its feet on the pedal, with Joshua Menefee’s late rushing touchdown putting a bow on the Bobcats’ 13th straight win in the city rivalry.
The Rams are off to their worst start in coach Harold Hoskins’ tenure.
“If you go and win out the next seven games and get to 7-3, what are we talking about?” Hoskins said, adding the Rams just need to “keep fighting. Something is gonna click for us.”
Eastside plays at Belleview (2-1) on Friday. Buchholz is at 5A-District 3 rival Ocala West Port (1-2) at 7 p.m. Thursday.
