‘Batman & Superman’ Have Oak Hall Football Rolling
Batman and Superman have a tradition that has nothing to do with saving the world in comic books and movies.
For Oak Hall’s BJ Johnson and Darius Medley, it starts at Chipotle. The half-brothers eat there together every day before taking the field side by side.
“When they put us together, it’s like Batman and Superman,” Medley said.
“I think I am Batman” Johnson said. “I am OK with being Superman,” Medley said.
“It’s an honor to have somebody that’s the same age and doing the same thing I want to do go out there with someone to chase dreams with,” Johnson said.
Oak Hall football coach RJ Fuhr said the senior duo are a key to the Eagles’ success.
“They are two huge parts of our offense and our defense for that matter,” Fuhr said.
Although the two say they are always together now, it wasn’t always like this. Before arriving together at Oak Hall in 11th grade, Johnson and Medley were not on the same side of the ball, let alone the same school. During the 2023-24 season, they played baseball at different schools, with Medley at P.K. Yonge and Johnson at Gainesville High after transferring from P.K. Yonge.
Although the two are now on the same team and on the same field, they still compete against each other more than ever.
“We are going to go against each other at 110 percent,” Johnson and Medley echoed.
So far, the superhero comparison has held up. The Eagles (3-1) enter Friday’s 7 p.m. game at P.K. Yonge (0-4). Johnson has thrown for 10 touchdowns on 25-of-44 passing and 394 yards and scored five on the ground with 384 yards.
Medley is averaging 7.4 yards per carry from the running back position, but he’s making his biggest impact on defense. He has intercepted three passes in four games and leads the team in tackles, boasting 33, from his defensive back position.
But their chemistry on the football field started on a field of another kind.
The two grew up playing baseball together, skipping through backyard fields and shining in the youth leagues. They learned how to read each other before ever reading a defense, but more importantly, learned how to stay together.
“Staying together as brothers, we never split apart. That’s what the good thing is about us. You’ll never see me without him, or him without me,” Medley said.
Football is a relatively new world for them. This is only their second year playing the sport, but their connection from years of playing baseball together quickly translated to the gridiron and resulted in a state title.
The two helped Oak Hall win its first Sunshine State Athletic Association 3A State Championship last year. Medley led the Eagles to the 27-10 win against Tampa Cambridge Christian with three rushing touchdowns on 16.5 yards per attempt.
Johnson is embarking on a new journey this season as the team’s quarterback. In 2025, he led Oak Hall with 481 receiving yards and six touchdowns. This year he has excelled as the leader of Oak Hall’s passing attack, showcasing a 116.9 QB rating.
Medley has caught four touchdown passes from Johnson.
“The connection is just incredible,” Medley said. “We always know what each other is going to do, even if we don’t read the play right, we’re gonna figure out how to make it right.”
The duo also addressed the possibility that this could be their last season together, speaking on the fact that it really hasn’t been something that either has thought about.
“If we have the opportunity to go play at the next level together, that is something we are definitely going to do,” Medley said.
Although every mission for Batman and Superman starts at headquarters, every mission for this Batman and Superman tandem starts in the Chipotle line.
