Tim Tebow’s ‘Promise’ Echoes as No. 21 Florida Flips Script on No. 4 Ole Miss
In 2008, the unranked Ole Miss Rebels trotted into Gainesville as the ultimate underdog, facing reigning Heisman Trophy winner quarterback Tim Tebow and a national championship-winning coaching staff. But the Rebels prevailed, edging out the No. 4 Gators 31-30.
Eighteen years ago, in the same stadium where he’d just watched an undefeated season slip away, Tebow stood in front of reporters with watering eyes and delivered a 107-word promise that led the Gators to go on a run and secure the program’s third-ever national championship.
“The most important thing to me was to truly apologize, and that means saying I’m sorry, and that’s the part I think was most important,” Tebow said Friday. “Just repeating it twice and then saying how things were going to be different, but [it] still means a lot.”

No. 21 Florida stunned No. 4 Ole Miss 52-28 on Saturday, one day before the iconic vow, improving to 4-0 for the first time since 2019 and foiling the Rebels’ plans of securing their first win in The Swamp since that 2008 upset.
The Rebels won the battle that year through a recipe of three fumbles, a blocked extra point attempt and a failed fourth-and-1 conversion by Tebow during the Gators’ final possession. The game’s significance didn’t lie within the box score, though; rather the postgame press conference speech that ignited one of the most dominant 10-game stretches in college football history, where the Gators outscored opponents by a combined 338 points.
While almost two decades have passed, his words are forever cemented into Florida history. About two months after Florida clinched the national title, the university put up a plaque outside the front entrance of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, immortalizing his speech.
Though Florida’s 2026 squad doesn’t share the same national championship pressure, Tebow sees some resemblance.
“The excitement [is] back with this team, and I feel like there’s a chance that The Swamp will be crazier than it’s been in a long time,” Tebow said Friday. “I’m excited about that because I also think for Florida to have success, it needs to be one of the most hostile places in the country.”
