Gators’ Kiyomi McMiller, Aurora Almón Compete in FIBA Women’s AmeriCup
She joins former Lady Lion Moriah Murray on Coach Tammi Reiss’ team.
Off the court, McMiller is also a founder of a nonprofit organization, “The Product of Hope.”Before arriving in Gainesville, she spent time with her local Nicaragua community. Three basketball camps were held in the country, with over 300 kids in attendance.
“I just want the kids in Nicaragua to know that you can enjoy basketball and also work hard too and that aspect of working hard can also translate to life,” McMiller said.
Reiss encourages community service and outreach as part of the Florida Women’s Basketball culture.
“She is really embracing mentorship, leadership and being a positive role model,” Reiss said.
Her mission with “The Product of Hope” is to provide underserved youth with the basics. Basketball is simply used to promote fundamentals. Skills are developed, allowing for opportunistic doors to open for a better life.
Although McMiller and Nicaragua lost in the Qualifiers, they have an opportunity to compete in the classification round – with hopes of earning a fifth-to-eighth place position and representing Nicaragua one final time at the Qualifiers.
Almón returns to action against El Salvador Thursday at 10 p.m.
FIBA Qualifiers run from July 12-18. Eight of the top teams from Central America and the Caribbean battle for the chance to compete in FIBA’s AmeriCup.
