Ben Shelton Faces Frances Tiafoe in U.S. Open Semifinal

Former Gator and world No. 9 Ben Shelton is headed to the U.S. Open semifinals, where he’ll face fellow American and world No. 12 Frances Tiafoe in a highly anticipated all-American showdown, looking for his first Grand Slam final.

On Wednesday night, Shelton played in the biggest match of his career with a five-set victory over defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (10-7), after going 0-3 in their previous meetings. 

This was his first career victory over a player ranked in the top three. He had been 0–17 against such opponents before the match, losing recently to current world No.1, Jannik Sinner, at the Australian Open earlier this year. 

This will be Shelton’s second U.S. Open semifinal, making his first in 2023. At the time, it was a breakthrough moment in his young career, as Shelton had only made his Grand Slam debut the year prior. He ultimately fell to 24-time slam champion Novak Djokovic, 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (4), but solidified his place as a rising star. 

Shelton has evolved since he was a college player at the University of Florida in 2021 and 2022. After making his debut in the U.S. Open in 2022, he made headway in 2023 in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open before his run three summers ago. 

In 2026, Shelton continued to build, winning the Canadian Masters 1000 titles back-to-back in 2025 and 2026 and multiple other tournaments, including Tokyo (ATP 500) and Houston (ATP 250). His current success is not as surprising as it was in 2023, it’s a representation of his growth as a player over the years. 

In the semifinals, Shelton will play a fellow American, Tiafoe, meaning an American will debut in the U.S. Open final. Why does that matter? An American has not won a Grand Slam since Andy Roddick in 2003. 

Not only that, but the matchup is the first time two Black American men will meet in a Grand Slam semifinal during the Open Era, which began in 1968. The winner will become the first Black American to reach the U.S. Open men’s singles final since Arthur Ashe in 1972. Tiafoe and Shelton will play Friday night in … Arthur Ashe Stadium.

That’s to say, a lot is on the line.
