P.K. Yonge After A District Tourney Title Repeat

With a 10-9 regular season behind them, the P.K. Yonge Blue Wave are preparing to make a long journey in the volleyball postseason.

A Season of Runs

The Blue Wave, coming off a sweep (25-12, 25-19, 25-19) against Keystone Heights on Thursday, faced a series of runs this season, going on multiple winning and losing streaks. For a team composed of mostly underclassmen, the Blue Wave have been able to regroup and maintain their spot as the top seed in Class 3A District 3.

“From start to finish it’s been a drastic improvement,” P.K. Yonge coach Enrique Wiseman said. “Again, we are a very young team … so really just trying to get better every day is all we’ve been talking about since the beginning,”

Repeat on Sight

Last year P.K. Yonge defeated Bradford in the tournament finale to claim another district championship.

In their two matchups this season, the Blue Wave have swept the Tornadoes twice. The teams are on opposite sides of the bracket, with the Tornadoes holding the third seed.

As the top seed, the Blue Wave face the winner of Monday’s Crescent City vs. Palatka opener on Tuesday. In September, the P.K. Yonge defeated the Crescent City Raiders 2-0 as part of the Bell Bulldog Invite.

Team Perspective

Heading into the postseason, the Blue Wave know it will not be easy to win consecutive championships, but Wiseman and his players are excited for what is to come.

“We’re playing in a similar district, nothing is gonna be easy or given to us, and we know that,” Wiseman said. “But, we’re pretty confident we can come out and win another district championship.”

Senior Xyiah Moore said, “We’re the No. 1 seed, so I’m excited to have a bye first off and then compete against Bradford again.”
