Trevor Lawrence Shines in 2026 Jaguars Season Debut
Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence put on a career performance in the team’s 34-10 victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. Lawrence dissected the Browns defense, completing 18 of 23 attempts for 245 yards and four touchdowns.
Lawrence’s 150.6 passer rating set a new career-best, beating his six-touchdown outing against the Jets in 2025. It is also the NFL’s highest in Week 1 thus far, with Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart trailing behind at 134.2.
Pro Football Focus lauds Lawrence as the league’s third-best signal caller so far, awarding him an overall grade of 85.2. Through the air, Lawrence’s 86.2 PFF passing grade also leads the league.
The Jaguars’ signal caller tossed four touchdown passes to four different receivers Sunday afternoon, putting him atop the NFL’s passing touchdown ranks ahead of Monday Night Football.
“I thought he spread the ball around, trusted the guys that were in to make plays,” Jags coach Liam Coen said postgame.
Lawrence also sits at No. 3 in yards per attempt, No. 4 in completion percentage and No. 10 in passing yards in the league.
Lawrence’s efficiency especially stood out. His echelon in yards and touchdowns came on relatively small volume, as his 23 passing attempts are currently the fifth-fewest among qualified quarterbacks according to PFF.
Lawrence was particularly efficient in keeping the Jaguars offense on schedule. He is currently the only quarterback in the NFL to achieve a first down on greater than half of his passing attempts, moving the sticks 56.5% of the time. His 17.4% touchdown rate also leads the league.
According to Next Gen Stats, Lawrence completed two highly improbable touchdown passes on Sunday. His first-quarter zip to Josh Cameron was given a 23% chance to be completed, making it the sixth-most improbable completion of the week. Lawrence’s on-the-run touchdown pass to Jakobi Meyers in the third quarter was also given a 26.6% percent chance to be completed, good for the 11th-most improbable completion of the weekend.
Despite the career day, Lawrence was not entirely perfect.
One notable mistake came when Lawrence drew an illegal forward pass penalty in the first quarter for attempting a throw from far beyond the line of scrimmage.
Lawrence referred to the play as “just stuff that can’t happen.”
Despite accounting for one turnover-worthy play according to PFF, Lawrence protected the ball, recording his second turnover-free season opener of his career.
The Browns defense, which looked helpless against Lawrence and the Jaguars, lost some key pieces over the offseason, leading to their collapse Sunday. The Browns announced former defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz’s resignation in February following the hire of Todd Monken. They also traded NFL single-season sack record holder Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams for a return package that included rising star edge rusher Jared Verse. Verse was ineffective in Week 1, ranking 83rd out of 90 qualified defensive ends according to PFF.
The Jaguars offense will face their first major test next weekend, visiting the Denver Broncos on Sunday. The Broncos defense led the NFL in sacks in 2025 and boast a secondary led by 2024 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Patrick Surtain II.
