No. 2 Lindsay Scott’s Catch (1980)
Winning Streak Prior to Game: Georgia (two)
Effect on SEC Race: Huge
Effect on National Landscape: Huge
What Happened:
One year removed from their horrific 0-10-1 season in 1979, the Florida Gators stood at No. 20 as they prepared to face No. 2 Georgia. After a hard-fought game, it seemed like Florida had the upset in sight.
Up 21-20, Georgia was backed up to their own seven-yard line with third down looming. Then, the unthinkable happened! Quarterback Buck Belue hit receiver Lindsay Scott at the 25-yard line, and the speedster took it to the house to give the Dawgs a late lead with only seconds remaining. The Bulldogs would hold on to win 26-21.
Scott’s 93-yard reception preserved Georgia’s perfect season, and the Bulldogs cruised to an SEC Championship and eventual National Championship at 12-0. The Gators would finish their season 8-4 and would suffer back-to-back losses to No. 18 Miami and No. 19 Florida State before winning the Tangerine Bowl.
