Newberry And PK Yonge Advance To State Women’s Hoops Final

Both the Newberry and PK Yonge women’s basketball teams are now one win away from a state title after posting state semifinal wins Tuesday in Lakeland.

In Class 1A, Newbery tops Hilliard 49-45 and now moves on to face Ponce de Leon for the state title.   In Class 2A, PK Yonge beats Melbourne Central Catholic 65-45 and will now face Miramar Parkway Academy tomorrow for the state title.

There was also play Tuesday in high school boys regional finals as  Gainesville High loses in Class 6A, Region 2 play to Leesburg 76-55.

However, other area teams won.   In Class 5A, Region 2, Eastside holds off North Marion 50-45 while in Class 4A, Region 2, Williston beats Mount Dora 70-62.   In Class 1A, Region 2, Union County tops The Villages 71-59; Hawthorne downs Hamilton County 78-71 and Chiefland beats Wildwood 54-42.

The winners move on to regional final play.
