** In local high school football, the Buchholz Bobcats earn a state playoff berth by routing Ocala West Port 34-7 in Gainesville Thursday night.   Tonight, a big Class 1A district championship game highlights the schedule as Newberry faces Union County.

** The San Diego Chargers even their record at 4-4 after beating the Kansas City Chiefs 31-13 Thursday.

** The Miami Hurricanes beat Virginia Tech 30-12 on Thursday as Stephen Morris throws two touchdown passes for the Hurricanes.

** The Miami Marlins hire former catcher Mike Redmond to be their new manager.   He played for the franchise for several seasons.

** The New England Patriots acquire Tampa Bay Bucs defensive back Aqub Talib for a fourth round draft choice.   Talib has been a starter but off field issues have plagued his career.
