Rays Win Eighth Straight; White Sox Continue To Fade In MLB

The Tampa Bay Rays win their eighth straight game on Thursday night, beating the skidding Chicago White Sox 3-2.   Evan Longoria’s homer in the ninth inning wins it for the Rays who now stand just two games back in the second wild card race.

Detroit nips Kansas City 5-4 to go two games up on Chicago in the AL Central.   The Tigers start a series in Minnesota tonight.  New York was hammered by Toronto 6-0 to reduce New York’s lead over idle Baltimore to one game in the AL East; the Orioles begin a home series with Boston tonight leading the wild card race by one game over Oakland, a 9-7 loser to Texas.

In the National League, Washington’s magic number to clinch the NL East is three after beating Philadelphia 7-3; Atlanta keeps pace by beating Miami 6-2.   New York’s R.A. Dickey wins his 20th game as the Mets down Pittsburgh 6-5.   St.Louis has a three game lead over Los Angeles in the second wild card after LA beats San Diego 8-2.   The Cardinals host Washington this weekend while LA hosts Colorado.
