Busy Friday In Sports In Gainesville

A lot going on in Gainesville in sports this weekend.

** Florida is hosting the SEC Cross Country championship at the UF Golf Course on Friday while the the Gator swim teams will face Georgia today.  The Gator volleyball team has two road matches at LSU Friday and at Texas A&M Sunday.

** The Gator men’s basketball team plays its only exhibition tonight when it hosts Florida Southern.   Florida will be shorthanded because of suspensions and injury and its regular season begins next week.  Florida is a preseason top 10 team in both major polls.

** In the NFL, the Miami Dolphins beat the Cincinnati Bengals 22-20 Thursday and won the game in overtime on a safety.

** In MLB news, the Washington Nationals have hired former big leaguer Matt Williams to be their new manager, replacing the retiring Davey Johnson.

** The NCAA has adopted five new football recruiting rules.   Some of them allow for more “dead period” times where athletes cannot be contacted and another bans school staff from attending all star games or activities associated with those games.
